Spot market load
availability softened by 10% and equipment
postings increased by 3.8% in the week of July 18-24, compared to the
previous week. Flatbed capacity,
especially, continues to ease with a 9% increase week over week, and spot market rates
for flatbeds dipped by $0.02 to $1.61 (line haul only) in this week's 30-day rolling average,
nationwide. Reefers are
still constrained at almost 6 loads per available truck, but
demand has ebbed since June. Supporting that trend, reefer rates
have cooled by $0.03 this week; to $1.53. The national average rate in June was
$1.59. Dry
van rates trended sharply upward from January through June on the spot market,
but dropped by $0.01 in the most recent 30-day rolling average ot $1.31. Van rates
increased more moderately for contract freight through June, when the average
rate hit $1.42 for line haul.
