Rates provided by TransCore's Truckload Rate Index.
- Flatbed rates on the spot market increased by 3.2% in June, from $1.58 to $1.63 per mile, for line haul only. Spot market rates are those typically paid to carriers by brokers and other third-party logistics (3PL) intermediaries. On a year-over-year basis, flatbed rates on the spot market increased by 12% compared to June 2009.
- Contract line haul rates for flatbeds increased by 1.2% in June on a national average, compared to May, and by 8.4% year over year. Contract rates are typically paid by the shipper directly to the carrier.
- The rate increases contradict evidence of an easing of the unusually high flatbed load-to-truck ratios of 32.6 in May to 27.3 for June and 19.8 for the first half of July. Rates are typically expected to recede when load-to-truck ratios decline and capacity constraints loosen in a given segment, but flatbed rates have not shown signs of declining. Spot market line haul rates for July to-date are holding at a national average of $1.63 per mile for flatbeds.
